Gilbert reached it's highest population of in . Spanning over 69 miles, Gilbert has a population density of 3,834 people per square mile. The average household income in Gilbert is $113,964 with a poverty rate of 5.30%. The median rental costs in recent years comes to $1,518 per month, and the median house value is $328,700. The median age in Gilbert is 34.1 years, 33.6 years for males, and 34.5 years for females. One of the unique things about Gilbert is that it is the most populated incorporated town in the nation. Its population makes it the sixth-largest municipality in the state. Gilbert will continue to have a water system expansion over ten years. The water system is designed to be "demand-driven." That means that the Town has contracted for an initial increase in water and then, during ten years, the town will purchase whatever amount of water it can actually consume. Another large transfer out is for capital projects totaling approximately 5% which reflects the success Gilbert has had keeping up with its growth through targeted investments in major roadways and local roads as well as future transportation improvements. The Town of Gilbert is a quasi-municipal corporation and as such has multiple sources of revenue, including property taxes and sales tax. The balance sheet reflects an increase in the Unrestricted Net Assets. This increase is due to the Town's goal of spending money with its reserves for unforeseen costs or costs that cannot be budgeted for during the fiscal year. Each year this number is calculated and it ranges each year depending on the transfers into and out of general fund unrestricted net assets. There was an initial plan by Patrick Banger to spend less than it had anticipated. However, the final approved budget increased for an increase in hourly wages for Public Works staff. Budget transfer for engineering services towards design and execution of major road extensions.

How did Gilbert get it's name?

In the year 1902, the Arizona Eastern Railway had requested donations of right-of-way land in order to construct and operate a railroad line on a path between Phoenix and Florence, AZ. A rail line was developed on a parcel of property owned at the time by a gentleman named William "Bobby" Gilbert. The siding built, and a slowly developing town that emerged from it, eventually became known as the Town of Gilbert. Gilbert because of it's proximity to water, has always been a prime farming community. This water sources was aided in part by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and funneled to the community on the Eastern and Consolidated Canals during the year 1911. Gilbert has always been an agriculture town for many decades, and up until the late 1920's, it was known as the "Hay Capital of the World". Gilbert finally took on it's current shape in the 1970s when the town's council approved an annexation of a parcel of land that totaled 53 square miles of adjacent county land. At that time, the population was only 1,971 in 1970, but the Council had come to realize that Gilbert would surely grow and expand beyond it's land much like it's neighboring communities of Mesa, Tempe, and Chandler. This was definitely a well thought out decision. This put Gilbert in a great position for the growth in the 1980s and still expanding today!

When did Gilbert become incorporated?

The town was incorporated in 1920, and by that time there were many businesses and families living in this small agricultural community. Bobby Gilbert had been granted 160 acres through a federal homestead act from the US government in 1898. That land is currently adjacent to Gilbert Road on west side. Back in the day, it was known as Main Street. Mr. Gilbert had first sold a 66-foot slice of his land for the Eastern Railroad to lay lines from the northwestern corner of his land to the eastern edge as it headed on a southeasterly trajectory toward the town of Florence, Arizona. Part of the land agreement made between Bobby Gilbert and the railroad is that the Eastern Railroad company would build adjacent set of spur tracks along the northern side of the main line, and that it would be called the Gilbert Spur. The spur would allow locally grown alfalfa hay to be shipped easily into Phoenix. It was good also for dairy farmers in the area. They were able to sell their cream, butter and milk to miners in the Kelvin mine. This arrangement became so successful, that in 1905 the Eastern and Phoenix Railroad Company, also known as Murphy's line, had built a depot next to the spur line. They called the depot building "Gilbert Depot". Merchants had finally started moving into the area, in 1908 in support of the farming operations that existed. It was when businesses began establishing operations that the area became Gilbert. Gilbert post office was opened in 1912. By then Gilbert had already been the map and established. The population started with roughly 500 when the town was officially organized within its 640 acre plot.
