How did Mesa get it's name?

Mesa, Arizona Year incorporated: 1883. The Valley's second-largest city tested a few names before permanently landing on Mesa. Mormon colonists from Salt Lake City settled the area in 1878. Mesa was a logical name because it was located on a plateau above the Valley, which is commonly referred to as a mesa. The town’s residents had been referring to the area as Mesa City or Mesaville. The U.S. Postal Service at the time however, rejected the name as Mesa. The postal service had assumed Mesa would be confused with another city in the area named Mesaville. There was also a period of time where the city was also known as Hayden because mail went to Hayden Ferry. At one point in its history, the name was even changed to Zenos. Mesa had always remained the most popular name by locals in the region, and so the post office eventually allowed the name to be the official beginning in January of 1889.

When did Mesa become incorporated?

Mesa became a town on July 17, 1878 with a tiny plot (compared to today’s foot print) of 1 square mile. The townsite had constructed and started their first schoolhouse the following year, and was officially documented as an incorporated Mesa City in 1883. The town at the time was estimated to have 300 people, and its primary means of survival was the utilization of the Mesa Canal. Fast forward a decade later in 1895, the town modified the canal’s natural water flow to install a power plant which was purchased by the City of Mesa in 1917 to fund more infrastructure projects to expand the city. With the advent of Air Conditioners, Mesa grew exponentially in the late 60’s.

What type of wildlife is in Mesa, AZ?

Mesa, Arizona has lots of furry and not so furry critters running around.
